The Essence of Sovereignty: A Reflection on Vietnam's Historical Journey
The essence of sovereignty, deeply rooted in the hearts of the Vietnamese people, has been a guiding principle throughout the nation's history. This concept, often referred to as "nhân nghĩa cốt ở yên dân," translates to the idea that the strength of the nation lies in its people. It is this belief that has shaped Vietnam's journey from ancient times to the present day. From the Triệu, Đinh, Lý, Trần dynasties, Vietnam has consistently strived to build an independent nation. Despite the influence of powerful neighbors such as China, Korea, and Japan, Vietnam has always managed to maintain its unique identity. As historian Nguyễn Khắc Viện once wrote, "Vietnam's history is a testament to its resilience and determination to preserve its sovereignty" (Nguyễn Khắc Viện, 2010). However, the path to independence has not been smooth. There were periods when Vietnam was under foreign rule, such as during the Chinese domination in the north and the American war in the south. Yet, each time, the Vietnamese people rose against oppression, asserting their right to self-determination. As noted by historian Trần Văn Giáp, "The spirit of resistance is ingrained in the Vietnamese people, a reflection of our unwavering commitment to our nation's sovereignty" (Trần Văn Giáp, 1995). In conclusion, the sovereignty of Vietnam is not just a political concept but a way of life. It is the foundation upon which the nation was built and the guiding star that continues to lead Vietnam towards a brighter future. As we reflect on our history, let us remember that our independence is not a given but a hard-won right that we must continue to protect and cherish. References: Nguyễn Khắc Viện. (2010).
