The Impact of Social Media on the Health and Academic Performance of Youngsters: A Case Study at GC Women University Sialkot, Pakistan
Social media has become an integral part of the lives of young people today. With the increasing use of platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, it is important to understand the influence that social media has on the health and academic performance of youngsters. In this article, we will explore a case study conducted at GC Women University Sialkot, Pakistan, which examines the impact of social media on the lives of young students. The study conducted by Mahwish Rabia, Samreen Adnan, Nadia Misbah, Humma Nawaz, Maida Gillani, and Amna Arshad in 2016 aimed to shed light on the positive and negative effects of social media on youngsters. The findings of the study revealed that the use of social media among young students has both positive and negative consequences. On the positive side, social media provides a platform for young people to connect with their peers, share ideas, and express themselves. It allows them to stay updated with current events and trends, and can even be a source of inspiration and motivation. Social media also provides opportunities for networking and building relationships, which can be beneficial for future career prospects. However, the study also highlighted the negative effects of excessive social media use. It found that spending too much time on social media can lead to a sedentary lifestyle, as young people often prioritize online interactions over physical activities. This can have detrimental effects on their physical health, leading to issues such as obesity and poor posture. Furthermore, the study found that excessive use of social media can also negatively impact academic performance. Students who spend a significant amount of time on social media are more likely to experience distractions and procrastination, leading to decreased productivity and lower grades. The constant exposure to social media can also affect their ability to concentrate and retain information. In conclusion, the influence of social media on youngsters is a complex issue with both positive and negative consequences. While social media provides numerous benefits, it is important for young people to use it in moderation and be aware of its potential drawbacks. Educators, parents, and policymakers should work together to promote responsible social media use among youngsters, ensuring that they maintain a healthy balance between online and offline activities.
