My Experience as a Homeroom Teacher at Ly Van Lam Middle School and High School

During my 6-week internship at Ly Van Lam Middle School and High School, I had the opportunity to be guided by Ms. Phuong, a dedicated and experienced teacher, as the homeroom teacher of class 12C. Class 12C consists of a total of 41 students, and from the first week, I was introduced and interacted with them. As a homeroom teacher, my main responsibility was to ensure the well-being and academic progress of the students. One of my first tasks was to observe and guide the students on campus hygiene. I emphasized the importance of cleanliness and taught them proper handwashing techniques. It was rewarding to see the students taking these lessons to heart and implementing them in their daily routines. From the second week onwards, I took on the role of a homeroom teacher and had a fixed weekly schedule. Every Monday, we had a flag-raising ceremony in the schoolyard. My task was to help the class line up and maintain order. This taught me the importance of discipline and organization, as well as the ability to handle a large group of students. On Wednesday and Friday mornings, we had homeroom activities. During the first 15 minutes of class, I checked attendance, discipline, and asked the class to clean up and review lessons. This routine helped create a sense of responsibility and accountability among the students. It also allowed me to identify any issues or concerns that needed to be addressed. Once every two weeks, on Thursday mornings, we had extracurricular activities with different themes. These activities were not only fun but also educational. For example, a week can be dedicated to the theme of traffic safety, where a group of students would reenact traffic scenes, convey messages, and ask questions to other students to receive gifts. This interactive approach to learning made the students more engaged and motivated. Every Saturday, we had a 45-minute homeroom activity. This was a time for me to provide feedback to the students on their academic performance. I commended students with high grades and reminded students with low grades to encourage academic improvement. If a student violated the rules, I would give a first warning and take appropriate action if the violation recurred. I also used this time to inform the students of any new announcements from the school. During the remaining time in the homeroom activity, we often played English language games to review knowledge and have fun. These games helped reinforce what the students had learned in their English classes and made learning enjoyable. We played games related to tenses, English word puzzles, or organized extracurricular activities based on themes proposed by the students. This not only improved their English skills but also fostered teamwork and creativity. Through 6 weeks of this internship, I had the opportunity to experience the role of a homeroom teacher and witness the growth and development of the students. It was a fulfilling experience to be able to guide and support them in their academic journey. Being a homeroom teacher taught me valuable skills such as leadership, communication, and adaptability. I am grateful for this opportunity and look forward to applying what I have learned in my future endeavors.
