The country pursued a policy of socialism and aligned itself with other communist states, particularly the Soviet Union. This period was marked by tensions with neighboring countries, particularly China, and Vietnam's involvement in regional conflicts such as the Cambodian-Vietnamese War. In the second period (1986-2005), Vietnam embarked on a path of economic reform and opening up to the outside world. The country adopted a more pragmatic approach to foreign policy, seeking to integrate into the global economy and establish diplomatic relations with other countries. During this time, Vietnam actively participated in regional organizations such as ASEAN and pursued membership in international institutions like the World Trade Organization (WTO). In the third period (2005-2024), Vietnam has continued its economic reforms and deepened its integration into the global economy. The country has played an active role in regional affairs, including negotiations on free trade agreements such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Vietnam has also strengthened its relations with major powers such as China, Russia, and the United States.
